The 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage recognizes that certain places on Earth are of "outstanding universal value" and should form part of the common heritage of humankind. The Netherlands accepted the convention on 26 August 1992, making its natural and historical sites eligible for inclusion on the list. There are 13 properties in the Kingdom of the Netherlands inscribed on the World Heritage List. Eleven of those sites are in the Netherlands and one is in Curaçao, in the Caribbean.
