I was pretty lucky because my interpretation of base DDLC lined up perfectly with what ended up being canon in DDLC+, so I ended up loving the MES lore. But yeah, if your interpretation doesn't fit, then too bad. I used to be way more defensive when it came to criticism of the MES lore, but now I completely understand why people dislike it.

My own take on the lore, pre-DDLC+, is fairly simple. That DDLC really was a relatively normal dating sim game in a fictional universe. What we see is the playthrough of one guy, the fictional player, whose copy of the game was 'cursed' somehow. Think of it like a Ben Drowned sort of deal. The player freaks out, eventually deletes Monika.Act 1 mainly consists of romancing three of the four girls: Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki. It is the only act without any horror elements, as Monika has not yet begun to break the game or alter the personalities of the other girls, with the exception of Sayori and the scene where she hangs herself as Monika's manipulations begin.
